Construction is a multi-billion pound industry that deals with developing and building anything from a housing estate to a bridge. Few industries are as wide-ranging, or offer so many different career pathways. Apprentices have a lot of occupations to choose from – if they’re the sort who enjoys physical work, they could help lay the foundations of a ten-storey building; build scaffolding around a famous landmark due for restoration; plaster the interior of an office building or maintain heavy plant.
Carpentry & Joinery is available as a Level 2 framework in Carpentry & Joinery; this qualification is aimed at learners that are looking to start a career in the construction industry as a site carpenter or architectural joiner. Learners could progress into employment as a site carpenter or architectural joiner, onto an apprenticeship, or further their studies by taking other qualifications at Level 3. The Level 2 qualification has a duration of 12 months on program.
This apprenticeship is available as a Level 3 framework in Carpentry & Joinery; this qualification is ideal if you've worked in the construction industry and have plenty of experience. Your work might involve supervising others or managing resources. You want to develop your skills further and move into a senior role or a position with more responsibility. The Level 2 qualification has a duration of 24 months on program.
Plastering is available as a Level 2 framework in Plastering; you develop a range of plastering skills including preparing surfaces for plaster, and working with fibrous plaster to create solid internal and external finishes. You also specialize your training with two optional units – e.g. laying screeds, fixing plasterboards or installing dry linings. The plastering apprenticeship is made up of the following elements: Level 2 Construction Diploma, NVQ Level 2 in Plastering, Functional Skills in Maths, English and ICT, Employment Rights and Responsibilities. The Level 2 qualification has a duration of 24 months on program.
This apprenticeship is available as a Level 3 framework in Plastering; you will study units from the list below which relate to your job role. You will also study: Employment, Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) booklet, Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths, Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS). Units include: Analysing technical information, quantities and communication with others, Analysing the construction industry and built environment, Apply plaster materials to produce complex internal surfaces, Apply render to produce complex external surfaces, Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries, Prepare and run in-situ moulds. The Level 3 qualification has a duration of 24 months on program.
Brickwork is available as a Level 2 framework in Brickwork; this qualification enables you to work as a bricklayer in the construction industry. As a bricklayer, you will build walls for new homes and developments, and repair and refurbish walls on existing homes and restoration projects. You will erect masonry structures and cladding in a variety of contexts, and learn to work safely as part of a team. The Level 2 qualification has a duration of 12 months on program.
This apprenticeship is available as a Level 3 framework in Brickwork; this is a work-based learning qualification that enables you to work as a specialist bricklayer in the construction industry. As a specialist bricklayer you will produce and maintain complex masonry structures, such as chimney stacks, tunnel linings and decorative stonework. You will also learn how to work safely in a supervisory capacity as part of a team building and refurbishing homes or non-domestic properties. The Level 3 qualification has a duration of 18 months on program.
The primary role of a Property Maintenance Operative is to optimise property condition and quality and to ensure the building is kept in a safe working condition. Property Maintenance Operatives need to maintain a high level of quality, providing maximum satisfaction to customers, clients, guests and team. They will understand the mechanism of buildings including electrical, plumbing, plant, safety systems and equipment. They will provide first and immediate response to fault finding, whilst maximising quality and ensuring cost effectiveness. They will ensure prevention of major damage that could result in extensive costs and minimise reactive intervention. This is a Level 2 Property Maintenance Operative Standard for the duration of 12 months.
General Construction is available as a Level 2 framework in General Construction; level 2 will suit you if you have some knowledge and basic skills in construction. You want to increase your skills so that you can take on more responsibility and more complicated construction tasks. There are 23 diplomas at Level 2. For each you'll take a set of core units covering essential skills. You'll also choose from a range of optional units, allowing you to tailor your qualification to suit your interests and needs. The Level 2 qualification has a duration of 24 months on program.
Civil Engineering is available as a level 2 Framework. The Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Construction Operations and Civil Engineering Services - Construction Operations – General Building Operations qualification has been developed for delivery in a working environment; this means you need to be employed to study this qualification. It has been designed to develop and recognise your skills, knowledge and competence so that you can work in General Building Operations within the construction industry or progress onto further learning. The Level 2 qualification has a duration of 36 months on program.
Sustainable Built Environment is available as a level 5 Framework. This apprenticeship is designed to take you to the next level of your career. You will study towards an NVQ Level 5 in Construction Management (Sustainability) and a Higher National Diploma in Construction and the Build Environment, giving you a clear route of progression in the construction industry. Providing you with the vocational knowledge and skills necessary for a career in a variety of disciplines including architecture, building services engineering, civil engineering, construction management, maintenance, planning, surveying and more, this course will allow you to progress from an Advanced Apprenticeship in a craft area into construction management. For this reason it isn’t really suitable for candidates under the age of 18, but is more for individuals with appropriate qualifications or who have been in the industry for a while and are looking to step up the career ladder. Alternative qualifications and appropriate experience may also be considered. The Level 5 qualification has a duration of 36 months on program.
